Along Via Trasimeno, from Castiglione del Lago to Rigutini

Length: 9.5 km
Duration: approximately 2.30 hours
Difference in altitude: +63 m / -63 m
Altitude: max. 301 / min. 253

The route starts from the car park near Piazza Dante Alighieri, from which you continue left towards via del Rondo. This way you reach via Belvedere, which corresponds to the sixth stage of the Via del Trasimeno. Our entire trek will develop along this path which, in seven stages, passes through the most picturesque and significant villages of the Trasimeno area and crosses its islands. The 160 km do not have a fixed starting or finishing point, and you can decide to walk it over several days or by bicycle.

Via Lungolago

We head towards the medieval fortress and walk along it until we reach via Lungolago, which we will walk along both the way there and back, admiring the placid basin from the numerous panoramic points or from unusual perspectives such as the mesh of the Trasimenide sculpture. We could also dip our bare feet along the shoreline, watched over by the majestic rocky spur of Castiglione del Lago, a silent guardian of our route.

We head towards the Rigutini hamlet, skirting the Leopoldo Eleuteri airfield. Created as a seaplane base in 1914, it was expanded with an air-land field just four years later. Although it does not have an asphalt surface, it hosted the Royal Air Force’s Hunting School from 1931 to 1943 and was used until the 1960s for testing SAI Ambrosini products. At the moment, its perimeter not only houses the airfield, but also the Wild Animal Recovery Center managed by the Umbrian section of LIPU.

Once we reach Rigutini, we go back along the same road; however, once we reach the pier, we take Via del Pozzino, which will quickly take us to the point of arrival.
