With its third edition that will take place at Villa del Colle del Cardinale on May 11th and 12th, the event dedicated to the vegetable garden and biodiversity is back.
An event for all lovers of DIY vegetable gardening, who will be able to draw on ideas and suggestions on how to cultivate their own vegetable garden and bring the product of their work to the table with a guarantee of freshness and authenticity.
However, shopping in the vegetable garden is much more, as its payoff Coltiva. Conosci. Cura. also states: cultivating yes but with the awareness given by knowledge – of the soil, of the practices, of the right products to use – and above all with care, understood both as the adoption of all the precautions to take care of the soil in order to obtain a healthy and safe product, and as an assiduous commitment to preserving the environment and, in a broader sense, our Planet through conscious behavior that protects habitats and biodiversity.
We ask Filippo Fagioli, creator of the YouTube channel that gave the name to the event and organizer of the two days in collaboration with Philms, Visualcam APS and Corebook, how this close union between gardening and environmental protection that distinguishes his event was born. «Growing your own food is an ancient gesture, which is almost 10,000 years old. In addition to providing us with an abundance of fresh and nutritious products, the garden is also a laboratory of healing. Contact with the earth, the practice of sowing and cultivating, and the pleasure of harvesting the fruits of one’s labor have been shown to reduce stress, improve mood and promote a feeling of general well-being. But the garden is more than just a place of food production. It is a living ecosystem, rich in beneficial microorganisms that play a crucial role in the health of the soil and, consequently, in the quality of our food.»
So conscious cultivation for the benefit of our health and the environment: «Exactly. Have you ever wondered if the products we buy at the supermarket nourish us enough? Well-nourished soil, enriched with organic compost and populated by effective microorganisms, creates an optimal environment for the growth of vital, healthy and nutritious plants. In this way, we ensure that we consume foods rich in vitamins, minerals and natural antioxidants essential for our well-being.»
How did your interest in environmental issues arise? «Green has a simple but powerful secret; it offers a refuge for the mind, body and spirit. It makes us feel good! I have not discovered hot water but many do not know this, convinced that it is an urban legend or a simple saying. I will not go into the many publications on the subject, I only suggest you read some books or articles by Stefano Mancuso, Andrea Mati, Letizia Palmisano, Nicola Lamberti, just to name a few. My passion for the countryside and for the vegetable garden has developed in me what in one word we could define as awareness.»

From here, La Spesa dell’Orto was born, from a YouTube channel to a cultural and laboratory event that year after year is becoming a model for multiple targets, from gardening newbies who discover the videos by searching YouTube for “how to…” videos, to those who want to delve deeper into topics such as soil regeneration, ancient fruits, permaculture, nutrition and much more.
The versatility of the event and its multi-target connotation is demonstrated by its structure, which is able to cover different areas and interests:
- a MEETING AREA, in a large space dedicated to conferences, with experts from various sectors;
- a LABORATORY AREA, where techniques are put into practice;
- a KIDS AREA, dedicated to the little ones;
- an EXPO AREA, used as a market exhibition, where you can promote and sell your products.
