Guardea, in the province of Terni, is a hilltop village overlooking the Tiber Valley from a strategic position on the border with Lazio, nestled between the Amerini Mountains and the broad river plain. Its name itself recalls its ancient function as a guard, garrison, and control over the territory, a role the town has fulfilled over the centuries thanks to its panoramic and dominant location.

The origins of Guardea date back to ancient times. The area was inhabited as early as prehistoric times and later in Roman times, when the fertile valley favored the development of rustic villas and agricultural settlements. With the end of the Roman Empire and the early Middle Ages, the population gathered in more defensible locations, creating the first fortified settlement on the hill now known as Guardea Vecchia. Between the 10th and 11th centuries, the mighty Castello del Poggio was built, a defensive structure with towers and walls, a strategic point for controlling the Tiber Valley and the routes connecting Umbria and Lazio.

Over the centuries, the castle and village were contested by various families and local powers, eventually returning permanently to the Papal States. Seismic events, water supply difficulties, and the inaccessible location led to the town’s relocation further down the valley in the 17th century, where the current center of Guardea developed. After the unification of Italy, the town followed the fortunes of the rest of Umbria, maintaining a strong agricultural and rural presence that still characterizes its identity today.

The current town retains a compact and harmonious layout, with narrow streets opening onto panoramic views and the main square, the heart of community life. Here stands the Church of Saints Peter and Caesar, an 18th-century building that represents the town’s main religious landmark and houses important sacred works and furnishings. Alongside its historical significance, Guardea maintains a strong identity tied to the land: olive groves, cultivated fields, and a vast forest area—part of which is still managed collectively—create a pristine and evocative landscape.

The municipality is crossed by the Cammino dei Borghi Silenti (Silent Villages Trail), a circular hiking trail over ninety kilometers long that connects small towns and pristine nature, making Guardea an ideal stop for those who enjoy slow tourism. A short distance away is the Naturalistic Oasis of Lake Alviano, a protected area of ​​great environmental value, a refuge for numerous species of migratory birds and a favorite destination for birdwatching and hiking.
