Traces of an anthropic past at Monte Tezio

The starting point is the Monte Tezio car park, from which you walk along a piece of asphalt until you reach the entrance gate of the Park, after which an uphill dirt stretch begins with a fairly steep slope. After a few hundred meters, take the path on the left, 963, also known as Sentiero Miralago, which allows the view to span 180° over the Trasimeno basin.

We continue the journey taking the narrow uphill path, skirting a natural cave with the evocative name of Sprofondo and then the Bellucci Wall, a place chosen by many climbers or by those who are just starting to approach the discipline. You soon reach the Croce della Pieve and, enjoying the vast magnificence of the summit meadows, you arrive near a circular amphitheater, defined by a stone wall.

This is the ice house for which numerous requests for tenders for the management of ice can be found in city documents, a material which, before the invention of the refrigerator, must have been extremely precious among the small reliefs in this part of Umbria. The roof of this structure, created by exploiting a depression in the grassy surface, has long since collapsed, but the arches that supported it can still be seen and therefore allowed the protection of the snow compacted here, which, in summer, after having been cut with the ax was transported on the back of a mule to the hospitals and rich houses of the Perugian capital.

We find ourselves along the south-west slope of the Tezio (961 m above sea level), characterized by a particular moat conformation: according to archaeologists, this particularity is attributable to a summit fortification (called aggere or Cerchiaia) which, in protohistoric times, she was responsible for controlling the valley.

We go back down through the woods (path 962) and close the ring to return to the cars.
